Sarcoïdose is een autoimmuunziekte waarbij het lichaam zich afweert en waarbij in verschillende delen van het lichaam granulomen (ophopingen van afweer - ontstekingscellen) groeien.

Deze granulomen verschillen sterk in grootte.

Ze kunnen zeer klein zijn en in zeer grote getale bij elkaar voorkomen, bijvoorbeeld in zenuwen, in bloedvaatwanden of in hersenvliezen.

Grotere granulomen kunnen verantwoordelijk zijn voor plaatselijke hersen- of ruggenmergafwijkingen.

Bij ongeveer de helft van alle mensen met sarcoïdose komen granulomen in de spieren voor

Sarcoïdoseafwijkingen in zenuwen leiden tot stoornissen in de zenuwwerking.

Dit kan zich uiten in zenuwpijn, gevoelsverlies of tintelingen en krachtverlies in de spieren.

Men spreekt in deze gevallen van neuropathie.
